Robert Ensio Niemistö
WHO
Robert Niemistö, a 27-year old from Hollola Finland. I currently live at the same town I was born in. I mostly do songs for myself to play and sing, but you could call me a musician too?
MEMORY LANE
How and when did you get involved with skateboarding?
I got into skating around the time Tony Hawk's Pro Skater 2 was released. I started to skate more seriously after my ninth birthday in February 2002.
First trick you learned or struggled with the most?
It took me five years to learn a proper kickflip, so I must say that. I also remember that during the early 2000's it was a must trick to be taken seriously as a skateboarder.
Best/worst memory in your skateboarding history?
Just the freedom of rolling around Lahti city or Hollola alone by night. The worst one is breaking my left wrist around 2011.
Ever been in a skategang? What is/was it called?
Not a serious one. We we had this group "Radical Beer Brothers" when I was about 20. I was more into drinking and having that type of fun then.
STYLE
How would you describe your skating?
I try to stay loose and not hurry too much.
What kind of spots do you prefer?
Little ledges, curbs, banks and transition. Good flatground with some manholes here and there.
What kind of a skateboard setup do you have?
I have an Brian Anderson's Antihero board with 149 Indys and Bones Reds. I prefer 8.25 boards but this one is 8.38. My wheels are some brand called Mosaic and I really like them. They are 54 mm.
Favorite trick?
Ollie Impossible on a flat. It just feels awesome to land one here and there.
PHILOSOPHY
How has skateboarding changed the way you perceive the world?
It's hard to say since it's kinda grown on me. But I think it has taught me to see how fucked people's priorities are and how crazy this society really is.
Has skateboarding affected the way you make music or other things?
Yes it has. It has taught me to improvise and have fun.
How do you see skateboarding as a culture now or compared to when you started skating?
It's better I think. More diversity and more people doing it from the heart.
ART
What music have you discovered through skateboarding?
Man... Sonic Youth and Dinosaur Jr. comes to my mind first.
Favorite song to skate to?
Aurora Borealis by Meat Puppets.
Who are the skaters/musicians you look up to?
Ethan Fowler, Gonz, Arto Saari, Julien Stranger and Tom Penny. Recently I've been into @a_r_i_n in the instagram world. She's awesome. Also Fabiana Delfino has a cool style.
I like Neil Young. He's my dad when it comes to making music.
Favorite skateboard graphics of all time?
Arto had that board with Karhu beer brand's logo in it... For some reason I liked that board a lot. Tikari has had some awesome graphics over the years.
Favorite skate video or part of all time?
I grew up on Flip's Sorry so that's it. Favourite part is Ethan Fowler in Tincan Folklore.
HEALTH
Have you had any bad injuries?
I've broken my wrist. My mental health was in really bad state for a long time.
Beverage of choice when skating?
I like water. Just normal water.
How do you take care of your body before and after skating if you do that at all?
I've had lot's of problems with my back from twenty onwards. There's been more than one time when I was giving up on whole sport. Nowdays I just walk around, cycle and do some type of streches. I try not to stress about skating. My biggest problem was stressing about skating and during depressions not really wanting to do it at all. If I don't skate for two months, so fuckin what. I'm still a skater.
Final words of wisdom or motivation for the young ones?
Watch all Timi Valo's parts.
