Introduce yourself briefly, what kind of music do you make and what gives you inspiration?
Dragged Into Sunlight is an entity which came to being over a decade ago. The informal objective had been to challenge the existing boundaries of extreme music without compromise. Dragged Into Sunlight has never had a ‘kind of music’. It is paramount that inspiration remains undefined. It is impossible to isolate the component parts. Inspiration is a current which guides direction. It is both fluid and meandering. The focus is a time and place where music was not as predictable or dispensable. Like cattle force-fed steroids to attain a more appeasing cut, contemporary extreme music is juiced up with over-production. Where the expectation that artists will become profitable quickly is not met, labels adjust their focus and whatever is next takes over. The life cycle of artists nowadays is seemingly a lot shorter, and output spanning even a decade is quite uncommon. Dragged Into Sunlight is the opposite.
If Dragged Into Sunlight was an animal, what would it be and why?
A pit bull. We are unwelcome, unpredictable and uncontrollable. Tearing things we dislike to pieces comes with the territory.
How did the band originally come together?
Those involved possess a mixed skillset and a variety of expertise. There is a common ground in that we are each focussed on our individual domains, whilst collectively benefiting from a deeper insight into extreme music and art. Dragged Into Sunlight was a necessity for those involved and we are bound by a fixation with the darkest that humanity has to offer.
The band is from the UK. How have the surroundings shaped the sound of the band?
Inevitably, our origin has shaped the sound that we create however it is quite impossible to define. We are not all from the UK. We listen to a lot of Black Sabbath though, so there is that.
What drives you to make the art that you do?
The need to create and exorcise. Whilst there is never a timeline to create for Dragged Into Sunlight, typically it is a time, a place and a killer instinct that drives our creativity.
How do you balance between the recording process and live performances? Does either play a bigger part for the band?
The prime objective is to create music that we like. Dragged Into Sunlight has not appeared live for some time yet we have continued to write. Live performance is ritualistic and something that tends to follow the recording process. Some recordings have only been performed live a handful of times and others not at all. Make of that what you will.
What is going on in the Dragged Into Sunlight camp at the moment / do you have some future plans?
We are still working through a series of problems with our previous record label however we have also been at work on new material for some time. We will likely conclude the present body of work and decide what happens from there.
What would you name as the biggest highlights or hardships in the band's history?
Welcoming the wrong types of personality into our inner circle and learning from that experience is both the biggest highlight and hardship in the history of Dragged Into Sunlight. The contrast in mindset is a learning experience that provides significant perspective, certainly demonstrating the fickle nature of humanity. In recent years, reflecting on those negative experiences has served as a poignant reminder as to the core that underpins Dragged Into Sunlight and everything that we do. We are fortunate to have visited places such as Japan and Australia, and to be as well travelled is naturally a highlight in our history.
How do the visual aspects of the band come together and what kind of a role does it have in Dragged Into Sunlight?
Visual aspects have no specific role however we do what we do and we like what we do. The focus is on creating an atmosphere and environment that accommodates the music we create and allows for it to grow. Visual aspects are very much curated around our creative output and we strive to work with artists who share our mindset. Certain like-minded individuals such as Justin Bartlett have consistently helped to realise our visions of hell.
If you could collaborate with any past or present artist/band which would it be?
Didn’t you have skateboard decks as merch or am I tripping? Anyway, what's your relationship with skateboarding?
We did have a skate deck following the release of Widowmaker back in 2012. Dragged Into Sunlight definitely has a very natural affinity with anything extreme.
Recommend three artists everyone should know? (bands or anything you wish to mention)
Solomon Asch, Thomas Hooper and C.C.C.C.
Last words of wisdom.
See you in Disneyland.
